CAP “Field Day” Station Makes Contact

During Iowa Wing's June Drill Weekend the Communications staff put on a CAP Field Day station in conjunction with the amateur radio community's "Field Day." Here 1st Lt Chuck Brudtkuhl makes contact with another station before the CAP Station is even fully operational.

From a perch, up on the hill overlooking Camp Dodge the call went out “CQ CQ CQ!”. CAP’s communicators enjoyed good weather for Iowa CAP’s first participation in the Amateur Radio “Field Day” contest during the June Drill Weekend at Camp Dodge.

Designed to test Amateur Radio capabilities to operate in a field or mobile environment by contacting as many stations as possible. CAP’s communicators contacted stations across the country and world using HF communications.

While CAP does not normally make use of Amateur Radio frequencies, this allowed CAP officers and cadets who are licensed as amateur radio operators or “hams” to experience what busy airwaves are like and to try to pass and prioritize traffic
quickly. Iowa CAP plans to promote a station next June too.
