One of Iowa CAP's Instructor Pilots will be a presenter at the EAA Convention this year at Oshkosh. Dr. Tom Schnell, a Captain in the Cedar Rapids Senior Squadron of the Civil Air Patrol, will present on the next generation of avionics.
Captain Schnell heads a group of researchers at the University of Iowa's Operator Performance Laboratory who are busy designing cutting edge navigation systems specifically designed with the GA pilot in mind. An important part of their design strategy is to leverage commercially available technology to keep the cost down. If you are going to Oshkosh your input and participation will actually be able to influence design decisions that will drive development of the next generation of GA navigation systems.
Captain Schnell is an instructor pilot and Search and Rescue pilot for the Civil Air Patrol. He has flown orientation flights for local cadets and is an Aerospace Education Officer for the Cedar Rapids Senior Squadron.
In addition, Iowa Wing will be sending over a dozen officers and cadets to aid in the CAP support of the EAA Airventure Oshkosh. CAP volunteers will marshall the thousands of aircraft that will participate in the annual event. CAP is responsible for providing perimeter control if accidents occur as well as locating overdue aircraft in conjunction with the activity. Over 250 CAP volunteers from across the nation will take part in the annual event.
