FROM THE DESK OF THE WING DIRECTOR OF OPERATIONS - LTC RUSS SMITH

Preliminary plans for next year. We are starting to work on next years calendar. If any unit would  like to help with any of the operational exercises for next year, please let  me know. We would like to hold training in each quarter instead of having  all the training falling into the same couple of months.

FROM THE DESK OF THE INSPECTOR GENERAL - MAJ MIKE KRENZ
I recently conducted my first squadron visit of the year at the new  Washington-Brinton Squadron. Last year I pushed hard to visit all of the  squadrons to help them accomplish their mandatory "Unit Self Inspection," but this year I have left it up to the Squadron Commanders to decide if they want my help or not (my help is not mandatory, but the annual self inspection is).  So far, only three Squadrons have elected to ask for assistance. I currently have the months of October, November and December available with a  limit of one squadron per month. Please send me a note if your are interested in my assistance in this matter. (ig@iawg.cap.gov) Otherwise, all squadrons are reminded that an executive summary of the self inspection  is due at Wing HQ no later than 31 Dec 2001.

Note: Washington-Brinton had no issues or findings, and one benchmark from their visit...Good Job!

GLIDER PROGRAM
"CAP Cadets glide over Washington." This was the front page headline on the Washington Evening Journal. Cadets David Childress, Jason Marner, Tyson Miller, Lanson Nisly, Samuel Zasadny and William Zasadny of the Washington-Brinton Cadet Squadron flew for about 20 minutes each over the town. LTC Steve Lewis the head of CAP's Glider program was the glider pilot and Capt Gary Aho and Jim Schmidt were the tow pilot, and all are members of the Blackhawk Soaring Club of Muscatine, IA.

NATIONAL EMERGENCY SERVICES ACADEMY
BY CAPT JOE CURRY

Training recently concluded for the National Emergency Services Academy held  at Camp Atterbury, IN, from 20 July - 4 August. Several members of the East  Iowa Cadet Squadron and one from Washington-Brinton attended or returned to staff/instructor duties. Captain Joe Curry led this year's deployment,  returning as the Commandant of the Advanced National Ground Search and Rescue School for the second year. C/CMSgt AJ Ohde made his third appearance at the school as well. He taught basic students as a Team Leader in the first session before moving to Captain Curry's staff for week two. Recently promoted 1Lt Don Church, his son C/CMSgt Aaron Church, and C/1Lt Dan Stone all returned for their second year. 1Lt Church was a Training Advisor in the Basic School both weeks, advising students trying to qualify as ground team members. Cadet Church was a student in the advanced school during the first session before accepting an assignment in the basic school as a team leader in week two. Cadet Stone completed team leader training during week two. Cadets Brad Smith, Andrew Whelchel, and Kristina Kearly and SM Brandon Hanson of the Washington-Brinton Cadet Squadron also attended for the first time. C/SSgt Smith and SM Hanson completed team leader training in the second session of the advanced course and C/CMSgt Whelchel and C/Amn Kearly were both rated as team members under the new curriculum at basic NGSAR in week two.

Congratulations to all of our new graduates and thank you to those who helped them get there. We look forward to renewed energy in the teams in the years
to come.

A BIG THANKS!

It has been brought to our attention that 1LT Joe Johnston is stepping down from his Wing Staff Position.  Joe has done an excellent job.  We will miss him and all of the GOOD work he has done for Iowa Wing.  We hope to see you still flying with CAP.
