IOWA CIVIL AIR PATROL FOUNDATION

The Iowa Wing Commander and Iowa Wing Legal Officer have incorporated the IOWA CIVIL AIR PATROL FOUNDATION.  This 501[C] (3) charitable corporation has been newly formed in order to assist Iowa Civil Air Patrol to invest donations from members and friends of Civil Air Patrol in placing their donations and bequests, so that donors can be assured that their generous gifts will be used and appreciated many years into the future. The Foundation will begin with a five-member Board of Directors, who will serve as the initial Trustees of the Foundation. The following individuals are named to be the first members of this Board:  Rex Glasgow, Iowa Wing Commander; Eric Schneider, Iowa Vice Wing Commander; Gerald Lowry, Iowa Wing Chief of Staff and Personnel Officer; Christie Battle, Iowa Wing Chaplain; and Douglas Tindal, Iowa Wing Legal Officer. Provision has been made for up to four additional Trustees to be named later to serve the Foundation.

Members and Friends of Iowa Civil Air Patrol may donate to the new Foundation by sending their checks to Col. Glasgow or to LTC Douglas Tindal. Donations should be made payable to "Iowa CAP Foundation," and are fully tax deductible. Additionally donors may wish to consider amending their Wills in order to include a paragraph SIMILAR to the following:

"Notwithstanding any other provision in my Will, I give the sum of $_____ to the Iowa Civil Air Patrol Foundation, in care of the Commander, Iowa Wing of Civil Air Patrol."

Members and Friends of Iowa CAP may also wish to consider asking their life insurance agent to amend their life insurance policy to provide a portion of it to the Foundation. Appropriate language to accomplish that would include the following example:

"I give the sum of $_______ to Iowa Civil Air Patrol Foundation, in care of the Commander, Iowa Wing of Civil Air Patrol."

With either kind of donation a donor may include a reasonable description of what he or she would like to be accomplished with the gift. An example could be:

"I request that my donation be used for cadet programs." OR "I request that my donation be used to provide scholarships to deserving CAP cadets to attend an encampment that they otherwise would not be able to attend." OR "I request that my donation be used to pay hangar rent for a CAP airplane at the XXXXX airport, or (in the Wing Commander's discretion) at another airport in any of the following cities: YYYY, or ZZZZZ, or AAAA, or   BBBB." These examples are merely meant to give you an idea of how your generous gift may be used to further goals that you yourself establish, within reason. The Foundation will endeavor to use only the income from your gift, and preserve the principle into the future.

Finally, please let the Commander know if you or someone you know would make a good member of the Foundation Board of Directors. Other Wings are well ahead of Iowa in having Foundations that have over the years accumulated hundreds of thousands of dollars, for the benefit of their CAP work. Iowa, with its dedicated, generous, and energetic membership, will surely come to be a shining example of CAP at its best, in just a few short years.

Anyone with questions about the new Foundation is encouraged to contact the Wing Legal Officer, Doug Tindal. His E-mail address is: prairie1@onlineia.com.

Editors note:  At the Annual Conference COL Rex Glasgow and COL John Lalla presented the Foundation to the membership.  At that time over $1,800 was donated by the membership in attendance.  COL Lalla matched the first $500 donations.  Thanks to COL Lalla and the members.

FROM THE DESK OF 2LT BRANDON HANSON

I see the expression on many peoples face as one of almost fear whenever we are told that CAP is going to add something new to the list of things we need to do on a computer or online. Why are most people hesitant to the idea of using a computer? The best answer I can articulate is that they have heard the horror stories of learning to use a computer. The evolution of the computer has made our lives much easier, it allows us to be able to compile data much faster than if we where to use the old pen and pencil. The first thing to remember is that a computer is only as smart as the person who is using it. Many of you say I am not that smart about computers. Actually you know much more about it than you may think.  I will give you the answer to almost any computer question you may have with one keystroke. If you can turn the computer on then you should have no fear of using it. If you ever have a question just press the F 1 key and a help menu will pop up and give you a tool to answer almost any question you may have. Now that we have solved the problem with us not knowing how to use a computer we can now move forth and enjoy the benefits a computer has to offer. CAP will be moving us toward computer to help us decrease the paperwork we do as members. So in order for us to keep Iowa a successful and progressive wing we need to embrace this technology and move forth. I am willing to answer any questions you may have you can look at as free technical support I look at it as part of that cherished pay check we receive from CAP. Please feel free to e-mail any questions you may have to brandonh@onlineia.com
