SPECIAL ANNOUNCEMENT FROM COL JOHN LALLA

As you all know, we are on a vehicle freeze from the Air Force.  One of the ways that we can justify the vehicles that we have, and those that we might wish to get is to keep track of the mileage that we now drive our personal vehicles.  Keeping track of this mileage serves two purposes. One - is the use for tax purposes.  I have copied the two pages of our current report and put them on one sheet.  This gives space for daily entries, all that is needed is the number of miles.  The second page shows how the vehicle was used and for how many hours.  This as I have said can be totaled for taxes, but it also gives us the POV usage in the same format that the Air Force is using to tack the corporate vehicles.  This will give us more justification to get more vehicles.  Everyone on Wing Staff is to report their mileage to
me in any form and I will record and track this to help Iowa Wing to get more vehicles.

FROM THE DESK OF THE WING DIRECTOR OF OPERATIONS

The mission aircrew school is required training for new ES trained personnel who wish to become observers, scanners, or mission pilot trainees. The school will be hosted by the DSM Composite Squadron. The biannual CD Downlink training will be held at the same time.  There are some personnel who need the CD Downlink training in order to stay active on the CD Roster.

Remember the planes need to be flown but watch the weather.  This is the season that each hour the weather can change.

DES MOINES COMPOSITE SQUADRON
- Just ask LT Dave Stensrud and MAJ Chuck Lord how well the new GX-55 works.  They were out flying when they heard a call for help from another plane asking for assistance in finding a close airport.  They were able to assist the other plane to land SAFELY at the Grinnell Airport.  Dave and Chuck say the GX-55 is a sweet piece of equipment.

EAST IOWA CADET SQUADRON
- A Change of Command ceremony was held with MAJ Terry Spitzer taking over the command of the squadron from LTC Doug Tindal.  Under LTC Tindal's command the squadron gained over twenty cadet and senior members.  Welcome aboard MAJ Spitzer!

WASHINGTON-BRINTON CADET SQUADRON
- The newest CAP Squadron in Iowa, Washington-Brinton Cadet Squadron is really up and running. Congratulations to Squadron Commander LTC Doug Tindal.  He has been very busy recruiting new members.  We are looking forward to meeting them at some of our events.

TRAINING HAPPENINGS

Camp Dodge has been a great place for many of our schools this past month.  We thank them for letting us use these great facilities.

For those of you that didn't attend the Unit Commanders Course, you missed a course that is very beneficial for every member of the squadron, not just the commander. We learned how to conduct a meeting and what is expected of your
fellow members.  22 people attended the two-day class.  COL Glasgow and CPT Schneider were excellent instructors. There was open discussion time and everyone had a chance to share their ideas.

Squadron Leadership School and Corporate Learning Course spring class was held on 3-4 Feb at Camp Dodge.  LTC Chuck McDonald and LTC Doug Tindal where the directors and they had an excellent core of instructors.

Cadet Leadership School was held the same weekend of SLS/CLC. CPT Doug Jansen and CPT Joe Curry were the instructors. Cadets in both the Officers and NCO's classes received instruction in leadership, motivating young volunteers, administration, drill and ceremonies, teamwork, and communications skills.

OUR TRAINING PAYS OFF

Iowa Senior Mission Coordinator COL Gene Kellogg notified COL Rex Glasgow, that an ELT search was needed in the Northern Cedar Rapids area.  He formed a team with LTC Mercer Richardson as Ground Team Leader and C/SMSgt. Aaron Church.  An electronic search began in the area of the SARSAT hits and at near by McBride, Marion and Lerch Airports.  Because ELT's found have been 10 to 15 NM southwest of the AFRCC reported locations,
a search of Cedar Rapids Airport was also conducted.  Bearings taken by the ground team indicated the signal was coming from the vicinity of the Rockwell/Collins hanger.  The ELT was located in a Cessna TU-206G which is
used by Rockwell/Collins for the testing of experimental avionics equipment.

HELP WANTED AND MOST DEFINITELY NEEDED

There are a few positions on the Wing Staff that are open at this time.  If you think you would have a couple of extra hours please look at the Wing Web page under staff listings and you will see what is open.  Contact our Wing Commander or Vice Commander.  Or if you think you might be able to help out in some area in your own squadron, tell your Squadron Commander.  Thanks for all that you do!

A note from the little flying bird......Do you know that even a Wing Commander and a Vice Commander can get locked out of a room.

Do you know that when you travel to Wisconsin for a meeting at Fort McCoy,  you can really see some interesting country on a "short cut" that takes a longer time to travel.

Would you believe it has now been a year of publishing IOWA WING CAP Online E-mail News.  As you can tell from this issue it has grown. We want to thank everyone who has sent information to us.  PLEASE DO NOT STOP.  We would like to hear from every squadron.  And if you can think of anything you would like added please let us know.
