A Train the Trainer Course will be held in South Sioux City, NE, by the Nebraska Wing.  Remember to register for this class before attending.  They can handle only a limited number.

The Mission Aircrew Ground School being held at the Des Moines Air National Guard Facility, is a must school for ANYONE who will be sitting in the observer or scanner seats of the airplanes.  Also for all pilots.  If you have not taken this course in the last few years, please plan on attending.  There is always new information being passed down.  Class size maybe limited so tell your squadron commander that you are planning on taking this course so he can make sure everyone's name is on the roster.  Also, DON'T FORGET TO BRING YOUR GRIDDED SECTIONALS.

The CN Class is for those who have been cleared long before this date.

The weekend of April 12 - 14 is a full weekend of training.
       1.  Ground team training being held at Camp Dodge once again.  This is additional training to that held in March.  If you didn't attend the March training, you still can attend this training.  BE SURE TO HAVE PERSONNEL WHO ARE INTERESTED APPLY ON CAPF 31's TO CAPT. DOUG JANSEN  AS SOON AS POSSIBLE.  Barracks at Camp Dodge are limited, so first on the list will be sure to have a place to stay.  More information will be in the mail soon.

The National Check Pilot School will be held at the Davenport Airport on April 13 - 14.  Capt George Cobley always instructs one of the finest courses in Civil Air Patrol.

Also April 13, the CN EVAL will be held at the Davenport Airport.  Those who will be taking part in this training will be notified.

And April 27 is our first combined Operation Exercise.  This will also be at the Davenport Airport.  All should have a good time putting all that has been learned in the courses in the last months to actual training between ground and air crews.

FEBRUARY EVENTS

COL Eugene Kellogg, IC, for one of the best weekend of training held February 15 - 17.  Almost one-third of all eligible members of Iowa Wing were in attendance at either Camp Dodge, Johnston, IA or Ankeny Airport.

The Search and Rescue School  was held at Camp Dodge for ground teams.  Capt Doug Jansen and Capt John Halbrook presented a well run course.  All in attendance learned the new things that are expected of the ground teams and urban DF  teams.  This is a new course that all ground team members will have to attend.  It was 2 full days of learning search patterns to locating a person at night.

Also 16 February was the first Aircrew training at Ankeny Airport.  LTC Chuck McDonald presented the new training for the aircrews. Many new scanners and observers began their road to certification.

FROM THE DESK OF THE IOWA WING DIRECTOR OF OPERATIONS, LT COL RUSS SMITH

Looks like winter is with us again.  Remember check the weather before you fly or drive.  Our members are growing in number.  We don't want to lose anyone.

All aircraft are mission ready.  Good to hear so many are taking all the new training.

FROM THE DESK OF THE IOWA WING DIRECTOR OF LOGISTICS, COL JOHN LALLA

In the new 77-1 dated 16 November 2001, CAP changed the drivers license form.  The new form 75 dated July 2001, requires the new CAP ID number.  Please include this number on all requests for drivers licenses.  The new CAP drivers licenses expire on the same date that the state drivers license expires.

The last change is on the back of the license.  By regulation, the drivers are now required to be signed off on each type of vehicle that they intend to drive.  The Squadron Commanders will be the Certifying Official for each Unit at this time.  The back of the license is to be filled out as per the sample in figure 1 of the regulation.

In the regulation in Section 12 reports, paragraph d, subsection 3 gives examples of the vehicle usage and what area it comes under.  (d) other and (e) other description.  These list what is to be included in each area.  Reading the new regulation may help clear up any questions.  If you have any questions, please contact me.

THIS AND THAT

If anyone belongs to the Elks Lodge, their National Magazine has printed a major article on Civil Air Patrol in the February or March issue. This would be a good time for any of our members to talk to their local groups about our organization in their own back yard.

News from South Central Iowa Composite Flight: They are really into training.  They now have 10 members and are still growing.  Many have their level 1.  We look forward to seeing them at one of our training sessions before long.  Good job Capt McIntire and SM Taber.

SQUADRONS HAVE SPECIAL GUEST
BY CAPT DOUG JANSEN

On February 13th members of the Central Iowa Composite Squadron and Des Moines Composite Squadron were honored with a visit and speech from Lt Cmdr
Larry Spencer.  Commander Spencer was a Radar Intercept Officer in a Navy F-4 Phantom jet during the Vietnam Conflict.  On the 18th of February 1966 Spencer's F-4 was escorting an EC-121 in North Vietnam.  Commander Spencer's flight was abruptly interrupted by a Surface To Air Missile (SAM) that disabled his jet and forced him to eject over the coast of North Vietnam. Commander Spencer was captured and spent the next seven years as a prisonerof war in the Hanoi Hilton in Vietnam.

Commander Spencer discussed how prisoners survived terrible conditions in the prison.  "Communications between prisoners kept us alive," he said. Prisoners used a "tap code" on the walls to communicate the news of the day and to relay information about other prisoners.  Prisoners lived in miserable conditions and did not receive good treatment during their stay in North Vietnam.  On February 29, 1973 Lt Cmdr Spencer was released by the government of North Vietnam.  On the flight home the C-141 that flew them back to freedom had an 8 ship escort with 4 Air Force fighters on its left wing and 4 Navy fighters on its right wing.  Returning soldiers were treated to the food of their choice for their first meal back on US territory.  Most soldiers enjoyed their first meal back with some type of breakfast that
included eggs, hash browns, and bacon, topped off with banana splits.
