NOTES FROM OPERATIONS AND SAFETY

REMEMBER this is wintertime in Iowa.  Make sure everything is in great working order BEFORE you fly, drive or even take a walk. Temperatures and weather can change so fast.  Warm up all equipment before using.  Make sure that someone else knows where you are going when you leave town and when you will be returning.  Black ice is so very dangerous and it shows up so fast.  Take that extra minute to get someplace, that way you just might make it there.

THIS & THAT

Heard from Burlington Squadron IA005, that we have some folks with their new radio operator authorizations.  Also the whole squadron is working on the new Emergency Services Program.  Davenport Composite Squadron IA041, Cadets Justin D. Smith and Richard l. Vandewalle, Jr., were presented their Mitchell Award and each promoted to Cadet Second Lieutenant by COL Rex Glasgow, Iowa Wing Commander. Senior member Michael E. McCoy was promoted to Major and Marlo D. Baetke was promoted to Captain.  A BIG CONGRATULATIONS.

Dubuque Composite Squadron IA043, Cadet Theresa Reuter was presented the Amelia Earhart Award by COL Rex Glasgow and was promoted to Cadet Captain.  A BIG CONGRATULATIONS.

On behalf of the Iowa Wing, we extend our heartfelt sympathy to Major Christie Battle on the loss of her father.

ANNUAL CONFERENCE

The Annual Conference for Iowa Wing was held in Dubuque, Iowa with Dubuque Composite Squadron as hosts.  Iowa Wing Commander COL Rex Glasgow greeted all and told of the state of the Iowa Wing.   North Central Region Commander COL Sheila Waldorf spoke on the state of the region.

The United States Air Force Heartland of America Band, Looking Glass, from Offutt Air Force Base, Omaha, NE under the direction of TSgt Carl K. Morton performed at the Banquet.

CMSgt (Ret) William Goodman, Iowa Liaison NCO served as the Master of Ceremonies.

Guest speaker with over 31 years in the U. S. Air Force, Retired, Chief Master Sergeant of the Air Force Robert D. Gaylor, the fifth Chief Master Sergeant of the Air Force, presented an excellent program on motivation.

North Central Liaison Region Director of Training, LTC Ken Kassen, presented the Torch Award to C/MAJ Jennifer Lewis and Major Don Hahn as her Mentor.

The Davenport Composite Squadron was presented the LTC "Cub" Betsinger Award for the Flying Unit of the Year.  One of the most diverse units in the Wing, the Davenport Composite Squadron prides itself on emphasizing all three of the CAP Missions.  Their base of qualified aircrew members continues to grow; their cadets are among the most active in the Wing; they have a strong internal and external Aerospace Education Program; and their Safety Program is second to
none.

The Central Iowa Composite Flight was presented the Brigadier General William B. Cass Award for the Non-Flying Unit of the Year.  Little over a year from being chartered, the Central Iowa Composite Flight has become one of the Wing's most dependable units.  They are represented at every event and major mission.  They work "hand in glove" with the Story County Red Cross Chapter to provide some of the best Disaster Relief Assistance in the State.  Several of their members attended National Special Activities this past summer.

C/TSgt Marie McCoy, Davenport Composite Squadron, was named Cadet Ground Team Member of the Year.  Qualified in Emergency Services since 1996, Cadet McCoy has demonstrated outstanding leadership and mentoring skills to bring new cadets on board as Ground Team Members.  She is a highly qualified radio operator and recently became a Ground Team Leader.  She has also attended virtually every Wing sponsored activity this year.

The Cadet Aerospace Educator of the Year is C/TSgt Andrew Whelchel, East Iowa Cadet Squadron, Cedar Rapids, IA.  Cadet Whelchel has presented interesting and unique Aerospace briefings to his Squadron nearly every week during this past year.  These briefings have included aviation history, current events, and quizzes that have challenged the unit's most experienced pilots.  He excels in public speaking and serves as a superb role model.

Cadet NCO of the Year is CMSgt Sarah Foster, Black Hawk Composite Squadron, Waterloo, IA.  Cadet Foster attended 3 different Encampments this past summer, and recently graduated from the Minnesota Wing's Cadet NCO School.  Sarah unselfishly worked all 3 days at the Fly Iowa Aviation Fair.  She was the "spark plug" in organizing the Black Hawk Squadron's Color Guard and led them to winning the Iowa Wing Color Guard competition.

Cadet Officer of the Year is C/Captain Theresa Reuter, Dubuque Composite Squadron, Dubuque, IA.  Cadet Reuter is a mainstay with the Dubuque Composite Squadron.  Currently serving as the unit's Cadet Commander, she has excellent organizational skills and leads by example.  She has recently earned the coveted Amelia Earhart award, making her the first ever Dubuque Cadet to attain this level.  She currently enrolled in the University of Dubuque Flight Management Program and soloed in August.

Iowa Wing Staff Member of the year is LTC Russell Smith.  As the Wing Director of Operations, he has assembled a team of dedicated personnel who have put the Iowa Wing in the best shape it has been in years.  He has brought the level of communication to a new high and this has led to an outstanding level of efficiency.  He has encouraged web-based aircraft scheduling; has initiated an avionics package upgrade for six of our aircraft; and provided continuous aircraft/aircrew status reports to all of out flying units.  In short, he lives and breathes Civil Air Patrol.

Senior member of the year is LTC Chuck Enfield.  LTC Enfield has been a highly dedicated member of CAP for over 20 years.  He is currently the Deputy Commander and Finance Officer for the Cedar Rapids Senior Squadron.  He holds virtually every pilot rating known to mankind and has flown over 150 Mission related hours this past year.  He also coordinated all maintenance for the two Cedar Rapids based
aircraft.  His commander, Captain Ken Kremer, has stated that the unit would not exist if it were not for LTC Enfield's daily involvement.

Commanders Commendations were presented to COL EugeneKellogg, LTC Charles Enfield, LTC Charles McDonald, LTC Steven Palmquist, LTC Russell Smith, LTC Doug Tindal, LTC John Walker, MAJ Donald Hahn, MAJ Michael Krenz, MAJ Gerald Lowry, MAJ Charles Lord, MAJ Mike McCoy, CAPT David Bachtell, CAPT Brandon Butters, CAPT George Cobley, CAPT John Halbrook, CAPT Doug Jansen, CAPT Ronald Scheitzach, CAPT Eric Schneider, CAPT Wayne Silver, 1LT Julia Bachtell, 1LT Brian Elfstrom, 1LT Kenneth Henze, 1LT Deanna Hoenshell, 1LT Joseph Johnston, 1LT Rebecca LeClere, 1LT David Stensrud, 1LT Robert Toenjes, and 2LT Vicki Ohde.  (If someone was left off our list, please let us know)
