GROUND TEAM TRAINING
BY CAPT. DOUG JANSEN

On 15-17 February 2002 there will be ground team member training at Camp Dodge, Johnston, IA.  This will be during the Operations Exercise on 16 February, which will be at the Ankeny Airport.  The ground team member training will begin at 0800 hours on Saturday 16 February.  Overnight accommodations are available on Friday night at Camp Dodge for those interested.  Ground team training will be both days and overnight accommodations for Saturday night will be included in the cost of the activity.  This training will help members to complete approximately 20 of the search and rescue oriented tasks needed to become a qualified ground team member or to requalify as a ground team member.  The subsequent ground team member training 13-14 April 2002 at Camp Dodge will be more survival skill oriented.  It is the goal that members who successfully complete both weekends will complete all of the tasks necessary to become ground team member qualified.  For this training members will need to be general ES qualified in the new system.  That is, members must have a current CAPF 101 and completed the new CAPT 116, or be a new member who has completed the CAPT 116 and been issued a new CAPF 101.  For questions on whether you meet this criteria please contact your squadron commander.  Members will also need to have a complete BDU uniform, a current CAP ID card, appropriate outwear for cold weather, sleeping bag, 24 hour gear, and an MRE or heater meal. If you plan on attending please contact Capt. Doug Jansen at djansen@iawg.cap.gov.

FROM THE DESK OF THE IOWA WING DIRECTOR OF OPERATIONS, LT COL RUSS SMITH

Remember, DRY RATE INCREASE ON AIRPLANES EFFECTIVE 1 Feb 2002.
New dry rates collected by Wing for the aircraft will be as follows:

Cessna 172  $16 per hour
Cessna 182  $18 per hour
Blanik L 23   $ 5 per flight

Flying the CAP aircraft is still a bargain.  The aircraft are well maintained, have GPS units, etc. The Cadet O rides are now fully paid just like USAF missions.  Let's make sure this year all cadets have their rides. The winter weather is now with us.  Remember to dress appropriately.  Freeze thaw cycles cause ice patches on runways, taxiways, streets and sidewalks.  WATCH OUT for the other person.

FROM THE DESK OF THE IOWA WING DIRECTOR OF GLIDER OPERATIONS, LT COL STEVE LEWIS

The 60 degree weather this weekend has made us motor-less flight enthusiasts anxious.  We will continue to use the Blackhawk Clubs glider until our new L23 Blanik arrives.  Rumors are rampant as to that anticipated date.  I understand the glider has been paid for and in production.  We are hopefully looking at April or May for its arrival.  In the mean time, preparations are being made.  N99750 will be the Iowa Wing Tow Plane.  Wayne Silver has been working on its conversion for a tow package, though we have to wait for the 180 HP conversion.  80 hours to go to TBO. We are hopeful that some seniors, and hopefully some CFI's will add the glider rating.  Our most pressing need will be tow pilots.  Qualifications are 200 hours total time, the CAP/SSA online tow pilot course, a tow pilot school put on by Iowa Wing and written authorization by the Wing Commander.  We are hoping for about 8-10 experienced and skillful pilots from eastern Iowa to start.  We have not set a date, but are looking at a Saturday in May at the Muscatine Airport.  Interested pilots should contact Steve Lewis at the contacts listed in this email.

THIS AND THAT

On Tuesday, December 18th, 15 cadets and senior members visited hospitalized veterans at the Des Moines Veterans Hospital. 1st Lt. Jim Smith, Moral Leadership Officer organized the event to pay tribute to our veterans. The patients received small gifts and well wishes from the Civil Air Patrol, with many expressing their thanks and appreciation for thinking of them during the holiday season  .Lt. Smith hopes to make this an annual event for the Des Moines Squadron.

East Iowa Cadet Squadron hosted the Iowa Wing Color Guard Competition on 8 December 2001 in Cedar Rapids.  TSgt. Rob Burds, USAFR conducted the competition.  Judges included Col. Rex Glasgow, Lt. Col. Steve Swails, Capt. Eric Schneider, and TSgt. Rob Burds.  The competition covered indoor and outdoor presentation of the colors, in ranks inspection, a physical fitness test, and a comprehensive written examination.  Teams competing were from the East Iowa Cadet Squadron and the combined Central Iowa team from Central Iowa Composite Squadron and East Iowa Cadet Squadron.  The combined Central Iowa team won the competition.  Members of the Central Iowa team included C/SMSgt. Lauren Seruya, C/MSgt. Aaron Larimer, C/TSgt. Sean Frantz, C/Amn. Eric Richardson, and C/Amn. Drew Schlosser.  The team will now advance to the North Central Region Competition at Camp Ashland, NE in March to represent the wing.

January 12 the cadet selection board was held in Cedar Rapids.  Twenty-two cadets took part.  Looks like a very active summer for our Iowa cadets.

On Jan 19th Iowa Wing held a training that covered the IAWG ES requirements for ground radiation monitoring and contaminated sample transport (radiation and biohazard). The first part of the course was taught by Lisa Gibney from Alliant Energy Duane Arnold Energy Center and COL John Lalla from Linn County EMA. COL Rex Glasgow and Major Mike Krenz taught the second portion, "Ingestion Pathway" that included an evaluated demonstration for sample transport and chain of custody paperwork leading to qualification.  Thirty-three members from 8 different squadrons attended.

CIVIL AIR PATROL TO SUPPORT OLYMPIC SKIES

MAXWELL AFB, ALABAMA - Civil Air Patrol volunteers are slated to support the Utah Olympic Public Safety Committee during the 2002 Winter Games in Salt Lake City, February 8-24.  CAP forces will be in place before the opening ceremonies and will operate for the duration of the games.  The volunteers will provide similar support for the Paralympic games, March 7-17.From the air, Civil Air Patrol will report on highway traffic and will provide aerial video support to the Utah Olympic Public Safety Committee.  The volunteers will also perform observation flights over critical infrastructure like public utilities and transmission lines in the areas designated by security officials.  With the support crew in place, Civil Air Patrol will remain on standby for additional homeland security tasking.  Two aircraft will conduct missions daily with additional aircraft on standby thoughout the main games.  Civil Air Patrol personnel will man the Emergency Operations Center in Salt Lake City thoughout these periods, and additional crews and personnel are expected to be requested form the neighboring wings to augment the Utah crews.

CIVIL AIR PATROL RACING INTO THE FUTURE

MAXWELL AFB, ALABAMA - January 15, 2002 - The Civil Air Patrol today announced a multiyear agreement as the primary sponsor of the NASCAR Busch Series No. 46 Lewis Motorsports Chevrolet.  By signing on as primary sponsor, CAP hopes to increase awareness of the three primary missions: Cadet Programs, Aerospace Education, and Emergency Services."The NASCAR Busch Series offers the Civil Air Patrol an affordable and effective marketing platform that will provide the vehicle to inform and educate the general public about CAP," said CAP National Commander, Brigadier General Richard Bowling.  "The enormous reach of the sport will enable us to introduce our 60 year old organization to millions of people over a short period of time." Bowling continued.  "This will provide the impetus necessary to effectively augment and advance CAP missions."  "Once the Civil Air Patrol recognized the marketing potential available to us through primary sponsorship in the NASCAR Busch series," Bowling related, "it became necessary to find the right team -- or the right fit -- for CAP.  We were not interested in just any team.  Other than the obvious criteria -- a driver with the ability to win races -- there were other requirements that had to be met if we were to enter into this arena.  The Lewis Motorsports Team fit the bill for us.  The Ashton Lewis, Jr., will pilot the No. 46 Civil Air Patrol Chevrolet, while his brother Charlie Lewis will continue calling the shots as crew chief.  Look for them to make their debut run on February 16, 2002 in the Daytona 300 at the Daytona International Speedway.
