THAT OTHERS MAY LIVE
BY CAPT DOUG JANSEN

Nebraska Wing hosted the AFRCC Search Management Course in Lincoln, NE on 10 and 11 November 2001.  Capt. John Halbrook, Capt. Doug Jansen, and 2LT Brandon Hanson of Iowa Wing completed the course.  The two day course covered topics such as COSPAS/SARSAT, ELT Technology, Air Force and other search resources, National Track Analysis Program (NTAP), and search management.  The course concluded with a day-long tabletop search mission to bring home the topics discussed the first day.  Students were divided into groups and each group had to appoint a mission coordinator and staff to complete their search objectives.

TAKING AIM
BY CAPT DOUG JANSEN

Over forty members of the Iowa Wing got to spend an evening at Camp Dodge learning how to use military weapons at the Firearms Training  Simulator (FATS).  The FATS is like a large interactive video game where troops fire at video screens with mockups of real military weapons.  The screen shows one of several combat scenarios where the participants have to demonstrate skill with their weapon.  The Central Iowa Composite Squadron hosted the activity that included members from East Iowa Cadet Squadron, Southeast Iowa Composite Squadron, Des Moines Composite Squadron, and Central Iowa Composite Squadron.  Capt. John Halbrook, Capt. Doug Jansen, 1LT Kelly Calhoun, and TFO Troy Ruffin instructed the cadets on how to safely use their weapons and supervised them on the range during the activity.

FROM THE DESK OF 2LT BRANDON HANSON

Over coming the fear of a computer virus. Once people have become involved in the ever-daunting task of computing they have obstacles to overcome. One of these is the computer virus. A computer virus is a line or a number of lines of malicious code written to damage a users computer programs or to open a hole to gain access someone else's computer or computer network.

A computer virus is one reason that may people shy away from using the Internet. I have had calls in the past from people that found out they had a computer virus and where concerned if they themselves could become infected with it. No, you do not have to worry about coming down ill from a virus your computer has got. But maybe you will become ill due to the fear of what it could do to your programs or data. Don't fear a virus become proactive and protect yourself from a virus.

To protect your computer from a virus you need to install a virus protection program. There are many on the market such as McAfee or Norton Antivirus. From personal experience Norton works much better. All you will need to do is install one of these programs and follow the step by step instructions to complete the installation. One it is installed you will need to update the program from the vendors web site. There will be directions in the program to help you do this. I recommend that you update and run your virus protection once a week thereafter.

There are many things in the computing world that seem as more of a hassle than the convince the computer provides. But by being proactive we can eliminate many of the problems that could occur during you computing adventure. I see around 20 computers a week that with simple virus protection their computers would have had no problems. If you need help finding an antivirus program or any questions about using your computer please feel free to e-mail me at brandonh@onlineia.com
