REMEMBER, THIS IS SUMMER, SO ALL CADETS SHOULD BE UP-TO-DATE ON THEIR ORIENTATION FLIGHTS.  IF NOT, WHY NOT.  THESE ARE FULLY FUNDED.

Operation SAR/EX Council Bluffs-Our missions in Council Bluffs went really well.  We practiced working with the Nebraska Wing.  Airborne video was demonstrated for the Coast Guard and the Council Bluffs fire department.  We had permission from National Headquarters to fly a reporter from a TV station in Omaha, who learned about our organization and how it really works in the time of need and how the cadet program works.

REMEMBER Ames Operations Exercise on 5-6 August. Let your Commander know if you are planning on attending, immediately.  There will be a Red Cross Damage Assessment I class on Saturday night.  Commanders contact CPT Doug Jansen with the names of those from your squadrons who will be attending this two day event, so he will have enough cots for all to sleep and enough food for dinner Saturday night and Sunday breakfast.  E-mail: djansen@iawg.cap.gov or 515-292-2571.

From the Iowa Wing Headquarters:  PLEASE when filling out your forms to send to headquarters, PROOFREAD them.  To many of us are expecting our headquarters office to complete our forms for us or do not put down correct information.  This makes for sloppy work that could make Iowa Wing look bad at National Headquarters.  It is not the job of our Iowa Wing Headquarters staff to do our work for us.

From the Iowa Wing IG - Maj. Mike Krenz:  Attended the National Inspector Generals College at Kirtland AFB in Albuquerque, NM from 13-17 June.  The IG program from the National level on down is being redefined to play a more significant role in Civil Air Patrol.

A few things have changed starting with Unit inspections at all levels.  New Unit Inspection Guides will be published soon, and the results of all inspections will now be required to be submitted to National HQ.  This will represent a much greater burden on the inspection process, and I ask the commander's continued support of the "one unit per month" inspection policy that has been established for Iowa Wing.  PLEASE establish a date and time within your assigned month for your unit inspection as early as possible.  Unit inspections will become a once every two-year event at a minimum, pending approval of the new CAP IG Regulations.

Other aspects of the program that are changing include the focus from process to compliance.  Emphasis will now be placed upon making sure that all reports are filed in compliance with CAP Regulations, all operations are conducted in compliance with CAP Regulations, etc… The new Unit Inspection Guides will reflect this change of purpose when approved and released (August 2000?).

Our newfound understanding with the Air Force is largely based upon our willingness to abide by our own CAP Regulations.  The inspection process is designed to educate AND correct.  Please continue to support the process, and ask questions before problems arise.

A big CONGRATULATIONS also goes out to Cadets Diane Henneberry and Matt Pundt of Davenport Composite Squadron.  These cadets received scholarships worth $950 each by the local EAA chapter of Davenport to go to Oshkosh for the EAA Advanced Leadership Camp 29 July to 7 August.  This is the same period as the EAA fly-in so they will have a great time.  Activities include: Actual aircraft construction, ground school, orientation flights, EAA facilities tours and participation in the airshow activities.

THIS & THAT

7/14, Friday night, 1830hrs, AFRCC notified Iowa Wing of an ELT near Iowa City.  LT Don and Cadet Aaron Church were just returning from a bike ride and had stopped by COL Glasgow's office when the call came in.  These three became the ground team and MAJ Mike Krenz and LT Bob Lee supported as the aircrew.  CPF1313 had the signal within moments after takeoff and lead the ground team to the Iowa City airport.  There a PA-28 that was at PS Air for repair was identified as the culprit emitting the ELT signal.  It was silenced and everyone was home before dark.  LT Don Church has his first FIND, congratulations.

We are all hoping National Headquarters will let us UPGRADE the aircraft fleet with GPS units.

Dave and I hope all is well in Iowa.  We are still in sunny California.  The weather here has really been great.  Hope to see all of you at the Ames Exercise.
