Hands Across the Waters

"Didn't know something would fly without an engine," "Ultimate roller coaster," " No I really don't want to take the controls", "Do I have to let go, can I help land?", "It was hotter than I thought it would be", "The only reason I really wanted to do this today was to fly the glider", "Being able to fly the plane was cool," "Where was that ELT," "My ears really felt weird in both the power and glider," "You mean your Wing Commander flies with us also" these were some of the comments from the cadets one Saturday in Davenport, Iowa.

The Davenport Composite Squadron from Davenport, IA, Squadron Commander Maj. Michael McCoy, invited the Quad City Composite Squadron from Moline, IL, Deputy Squadron Commander LTC Brian Nielsen, and the Dubuque Composite Squadron from Dubuque, IA, Squadron Commander Ron Scheitzach, to take part in orientation (O rides) flights for their cadets.  It was set up to include both power and glider flight plus some ELT (electronic locator transmitter) ground team work.  This was the first time the Iowa and Illinois Squadrons had participated in a joint event of this type.

LTC Steve Lewis, Director of the Iowa Wing Glider program and Capt Gary Aho piloted the glider with the cadets.  COL Russ Smith, Iowa Wing Commander, LTC Bruce Wright, Maj. Jerry Lowry, Maj. McCoy and 1LT Kim Kirschman piloted the tow plane.

LTC Wright, Maj. McCoy, Capt Jim Clonts, 1LT Kirschman, 1LT Terry Kruse, gave the cadets power O rides.

LTC Nielsen, 2LT Paul Wakeman and SM Laura Prine were in charge of the ELT practice.

Maj. Dave Bachtell, Maj. Ron Scheitzach, Capt. Julia Bachtell, Capt. Robby Clark, Capt Drew Waggoner, Capt. Rosemary Wilson, 1LT John Hoenshell, 1LT John Wilson, 2LT Richard Rogers, 2LT Paul Wakeman, SM James Brownell, SM Gary Hess, SM Steve Robinson helped out on the administration, flight line, driver, radio operators, and cook.

Cadets: Cassie Brownell, Jeffery Carstensen, Tim Collins, Pat Conrad, Brittney Gish, Brian Hess, Seth Kimbell, Shawn Maxwell, Eric McCoy, Michael Morris, Bradley Rogers, Matt Runte, Zachary Shafer, Jeimie Schever, Jeffery Schwan, Terry Showers, Adam Sonneville and Tiffany Stirk took part in the day long activity.

There were 14 glider and 11 power flights.  This was an adventure that they plan on doing again.  All had a good time making new friends with the "Squadron across the Water."

Glider News:

The Iowa Wing Glider Program had an excellent year.  We received N403BA, an L-23 Super Blanik in April, directly from the over seas manufacturer.  It took its first flight on June 12, 2002 and flight counting for 2002 ended September 30.  We completed 304 flights which include 56 B-15 Cadet Orientation Flights, 140 B-16 Cadet Training Flight at Minnesota Flight encampment and senior flying and instruction flying that resulted in a Commercial glider rating for Tom Schnell and a Certified Flight Instructor glider rating for Tim Busch.  Ralph Tomlinson, Director of Operations has tasked us with 500 flights for 2003.  That is aggressive but we can met it with lots of assistance.  We have also been tasked by the Region Commander to increase our orientation rides by 10% in the glider.  I have had several continue to ask about getting started on a private or CFI add-on or start glider instruction towards solo and/or a license.  Unfortunately it is not free but cheap as flight cost normally go.  Cost is $15.00 per tow and $5.00 per glider flight or $20.00 per flight.  There is no cost for instruction.  Estimating, a glider private pilot add on to a power rating will be around $400.00, CFI add-on $600, training to solo for a non-pilot about $650.00 and to a pilot license about $1000.00.  Winter still gives us lots of opportunities to fly the glider both for instruction and "O" flights.  Contact point is LTC Steve Lewis, 319-752-2771 or gliders@iawg.cap.gov

Note from the Inspector General:

The IG works for the Wing Commander.  He performs Inspections and investigates Complaints.

The Subordinate Unit Inspection is mandated by CAP regulations and requires that each unit be inspected at least once every two years.

Complaints are sent to Wing HQ, where the Wing Commander decides whether to handle the issue raised as a command issue, refer it to National Headquarters, if required by CAP regulations, or assign it to the Inspector General for investigation.

Proficiency Taxiing

Iowa Wing air crews and ground teams were activated for an ELT mission Saturday October 12th in Far Western Iowa. Incident Commander Col. Russ Smith received a call at 11:45 AM Saturday morning notifying him of the need for assistance of Iowa Wing from AFRCC. LTC Ralph Tomlinson and 1Lt Kim Kirschman along with 2LT Justin Pedersen were the aircrew in CF1376. Captain Doug Jansen, along with Lt.’s Anita and Roger Elliott and cadet Jackie Elliott made up the ground team in IACAP 611.

While enroute the aircrew received a signal on 243 MHz the military ELT frequency in route to offut Air Force Base. 11,000 ft. of runway was a lot of taxing for CF1376 and their aircrew. With the escort of security police the aircrew located and deactivated the ELT. The ELT was found in an USAF RC135. Thank you to all who helped on this mission.
